| Description | 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase ( ) oxidises 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, a tyrosine and phenylalanine catabolite, to homogentisate. Homogentisate can undergo a further non-enzymatic oxidation and polymerisation into brown pigments that protect some bacterial species from light.
