Mitochondrial transcription termination factor family protein
TAIR Computational Description
Mitochondrial transcription termination factor family protein;(source:Araport11)
TAIR Curator Summary
Encodes BELAYA SMERT (BSM), a plastid-localized protein homologous to mitochondrial transcription termination factors (mTERF) found in animal. Mutant bsm cells are albino, are compromised in growth, and suffer defects in global plastidic gene expression. The mRNA is cell-to-cell mobile.
TAIR Short Description
Mitochondrial transcription termination factor family protein
Transcription termination factor required for processing and steady-state levels of plastid transcripts. Required for splicing of the chloroplastic Clp protease (ClpP) group IIa intron. Required for maturation of 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA in the chloroplast. Essential for embryogenesis (PubMed:21464319). Required for the maintenance of the correct levels of transcripts in the mitochondria and chloroplasts.
