Mutants impaired in the expression of this gene have been selected through their resistance to fosmidomycin, a strong inhibitor of DXR, an enzyme of the methylerythritol-dependent IPP biosynthesis pathway. The pathway enzymes were upregulated in the mutant seedlings.
