| Description | Streptococcal species produce a lantibiotic, streptin, in a similar manner to the production of nisin and subtilin by other lactic acid bacteria, in order to compete against competing bacteria within the environment []. Its production is regulated through quorum sensing []. The immunity protein protects the bacterium from destruction by its own lantibiotic. In general, there is little homology between the immunity proteins of different genera of bacteria.
